In general

Speed (whizz, sulph, base) is an upper, the active substance is Amphetamine. Speed is a chemical substance with a stimulating effect. It occurs as a powder, only rarely as a tablet. Speed can be snorted, swallowed or injected. When snorted it will be transferred into the blood through the mucous membrane of the nose and the effects are noticeable within a few minutes. When swallowed, it will take fifteen to thirty minutes to take effect. When injected into a vein the effects are almost instant.

Physical effects

Tense muscles, increased heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature, dilated pupils, dry mouth.

Psychological effects

Increased alertness, energy, restlessness, bloated ego, euphoria.

Sex work

The effect speed has on sex depends on the amount you take. Your sex drive increases or decreases. With a small dose of speed your sex drive and self-confidence increase. Your erection is prolonged and orgasm is delayed. When you take a large dose or daily intake adverse effects occur. Speed tolerance easily causes you to take a larger dose. This may lead to exhaustion, paranoia and an increasing tendency to aggression. Usually erection and orgasm problems occur. Your stamina is at a high level, you have difficulty reaching orgasm so the sex is prolonged. However if you fuck for longer periods of time, small wounds will occur to the mucous membranes of anus and penis. This, in turn, means you risk HIV and other STIs or you may transfer STIs to your sex partner.

The combination of speed and alcohol means a greater intake of alcohol as you do not feel drunk. The hangover next day will be twice as severe. The combination will increase your heart rate, increase the risk of head aches and nausea. The risk of dehydration, hyperthermia and brain damage also increases while the strain on the heart is enhanced. The combination of speed and cannabis causes anxiety and restlessness. Speed and cocaine disturb the level of adrenaline. After use you may feel numb and empty. Speed together with coke increases the blood pressure and causes extra strain to heart and blood vessels. The interaction of speed and GHB may be dangerous. As speed is a stimulant, you hardly notice the narcotic effect of the GHB, which in turn will cause taking an overdose of GHB. Speed increases the hallucinatory effect of ketamine. The combination causes stomach disorders (nausea and vomiting). Taking speed together with ecstasy or MDMA can be dangerous because of the extra heart strain. You may risk exhaustion. The hangover can be so severe that you may experience both psychological and physical effects. You may feel empty, numb and depressed.

Short-term risks

Dehydration, stiff jaws, teeth grinding, palpitations, perspiring, dizziness, nausea, head aches, insomnia, decreased sexual potency, feeling overwrought and irritable, aggression, mental problems, hangover, hyperthermia, heart problems, overdose, epileptic seizures, liver damage, hallucinations, exhaustion, strong dependence.

Long-term risks

Dental damage, weight loss, infection of the mucous membrane of the nose, increase of heart rhythm disorders, heart attack and brain haemorrhage, exhaustion, fatigue, reduced resistance and health condition, bad skin, dependence.

Safe(r) use

  • To remedy negative effects: do not use at all as it will delay the backlash.
  • Take a good rest before and after using speed.
  • Clients under the influence of speed tend to want rough sex that is prolonged. At the same time coke dehydrates the mucous membranes in the anus, which increases the risk of small wounds and broken condoms. Change the condom every 15 minutes and use lots of lubricant.
  • You will have difficulty eating when taking speed or after. But food will help to remedy some of the negative after effects. Eating well before use builds up some reserve. Eat something easy like bananas, smoothies or liquid-based breakfast and you will feel better afterwards.
  • Afterwards build up your reserves with healthy food. High protein food, lots of vegetables and fruit will help recovering quickly and in the long run it will limit the damage done.
  • Watch out for hyperthermia. take a rest now and then and drink a glass of water to prevent dehydration, but no more than two glasses an hour to prevent water intoxication.
  • Never share your straw with others to prevent infectious diseases.
  • Speed causes a dry mouth. This, combined with teeth grinding, increases the risk of dental damage. Stimulate the production of saliva by chewing sugar-free chewing gum.
  • You are strongly advised to have your speed tested. For a free and anonymous test in your neighbourhood check: drugs-test.nl.
  • Speed can have an aphrodisiac effect and decreases inhibitions, so it may cause you to push your limits. Use safe sex methods like condoms and sufficient lubricant.
